IMF says Myanmar will fastest growing economy in 2016
It will take decades for Myanmar to undo some of the economic damage inflicted by the military regime that ruled the country for more than 50 years.
But after the country installed its first civilian government in decades in March, the healing is under way. In the latest World Economic Outlook , the International Monetary Fund forecasts Myanmar’s economy will grow by 8.6% in 2016, the fastest pace among the nearly 200 countries for which the organization provided forecasts.
Myanmar is starting from a relatively low base so the country should be able to grow at a high rate for many years. That is assuming the politicians don't screw it up. Remember Mongolia was the fastest growing economy in the world several years ago (17% per year growth) and the politicians made every bad decision in the book (the slowdown in China did not help either). The country is virtually at a stand still now and has sorts of issues.
